About the Ruoslahti Lab

Dr. Erkki Ruoslahti is adjunct distinguished professor at UC Santa Barbara and leads a research group at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. The team's work revolves around tumors and vessels—both blood vessels and those of the lymphatic system. Blood vessels are necessary for tumors to grow and, along with lymphatic vessels, provide a conduit for cancer metastasis. Using specific markers of tumor blood vessels that the team identified, they have been able to target drugs directly into tumors. They are also looking to the unique properties of nanoparticles to create even more tumor-specific drugs, able to penetrate the cancerous tissue and leave neighboring cells unharmed.
